Whiskers, Wine and Something Divine fundraiser slated for Thursday

The Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown’s Whiskers, Wine and Something Divine is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year. Now in its seventh year, the event will take place Thursday evening from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Midnight Ballroom.

The ARL of Marshalltown does not receive any government funding, and instead relies solely on donations and fundraisers.

“This fundraiser generates about one-sixth of our roughly $300,000 a year budget,” said Shelly Deal, who serves as director of the organization. “The funds raised go to general operating expenses: our water bill, heat, food, vaccinations, microchips and spaying and neutering.”

Attendees can enjoy a social hour at 5:30 p.m. with wine tasting sponsored by Hy-Vee, and hors d’oeuvres provided by local vendors. A pasta dinner will then be served by the Midnight Ballroom. New this year is the inclusion of craft beer tasting, sponsored by Iowa River Brewing Company. There will be a live auction, starting at 7 p.m., with services provided by Casady Auctioneering, as well as a silent auction filled with goodies donated by local merchants.

“Without our community we couldn’t do it [keep our doors open],” Deal said.

KIX 101.1 morning co-host Melia Jeanne will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

New this year will be a surprise fundraiser “game” with the winner determined by who gets the most votes via monetary donations.

“We’re asking people to bring cash and checks, which will then be used to cast their votes,” Deal said. “We are keeping [the theme] a surprise until the night of the event.”

Tickets cost $40 per person in advance, and $45 at the door, and are being sold at the ARL of Marshalltown, Animal Clinic–The Vet, Hy-Vee and Happy Tails.
