Can you solve the murder?

“The Butler Did It” — a two act play — is styled as a classic whodunit. It opens Friday at the Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse and will be put on by the Marshalltown Community Theatre. Showtimes are: April 27-29 and May 4-6, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Six actors carry the show: Andrew Hughes, Ken Walton, Amy Van Holland, Joshua Krough, Scott Lindborg and Brittany Cobb. Nicole Lynch, who serves on the MCT board, is making her directorial debut.

“I have done hair and makeup for other productions, and was asked to direct a show,” Lynch said. “I thought [this play] would be good. It is a comedy and a drama.”

Lynch described the show as a “play within a play” whereby the cast of characters has to solve the murder of Angela Butler, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.

“It starts out with the family — the Butlers — getting back from a party, and the butler asks them questions. The wife (Angela Butler) gets a present from a secret admirer then dies,” Lynch noted. “It is more of a show for adults, than kids.”

The play’s tagline is: “Shady butlers, suspicious actions, one shocking twist.”

“The cast has been great. It’s definitely made me want to direct more shows,” Lynch said.

The show was written by Walter and Peter Marks.

Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for students, and kids 12 and under are $5. The box office is open from noon to 2 p.m. Monday-Saturday by calling: 641-752-4164, and one hour before each show starts. This show is on the season ticket. To learn more, visit: www.marshalltowncommunitytheatre.org.
