Flames engulf garage

MFD extinguishes blaze in ‘minutes’

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Marshalltown firefighters were on the scene of a blaze at a detached garage at 111 N. 2nd Ave. Tuesday afternoon. MFD Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Cross said firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze within minutes. The investigation is ongoing.

A plume of black smoke was visible to many on Marshalltown’s north side early Tuesday afternoon, and the Marshalltown Fire Department was quick to respond.

“We were under control within the first five minutes,” said MFD Deputy Chief Christopher Cross of the fire that engulfed detached garage at 111 N. 2nd Ave. “There was a vehicle that was involved as well.”

The garage measured 800 square feet, according to an MFD statement on the incident. The garage and vehicle were both declared a “total loss.”

However, he said no one was harmed in the fire, and that the garage did not appear to contain anything of particular value.

“It was enough water with one line,” Cross said, adding a second water line was attached as a safeguard as firefighters combatted the flame.

One question that remained in the aftermath of the fire was the identity of the property owner.

“The owner is not yet known, and the (Marshalltown) Police Department is helping with the investigation,” Cross said.

In total, seven firefighters responded to the call Tuesday, as did two police officers, one ambulance and utility vehicles.

Cross said the investigation into the fire is ongoing.
