Marshalltown Art Festival planning underway

Event slated for July 21

T-R FILE PHOTO— The Marshalltown Art Festival, formerly known as the Linn Creek Arts Festival, will take place July 21 in dowtown Marshalltown. With free admission, the event offers art vendors, food, live music and kids' activities.

The Marshalltown Art Festival, formerly known as the Linn Creek Arts Festival, draws from a variety of components to create a day of artistic fun.

Now held in downtown Marshalltown, the festival will stretch from Center Street to Second Avenue, and around the north side of the Marshall County Courthouse, taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 21.

In years past, the festival was held on the grounds of the Fisher Community Center.

“In addition to it being completely free, it’s an opportunity for people to enjoy a family-friendly event,” said Amber Danielson, executive director of the Marshall County Arts and Culture Alliance, which puts on this event with the help of other sponsors.

A total of 50 artisans will be selling their wares, which range from jewelry, wood, metal, ceramic, glass, leather, photography and mixed media. Kids’ activities — all free — will include sidewalk chalk, spin art, face painting and a balloon artist. A returning favorite (for adults and kids) is free henna art.

New this year will be yoga offered near the Glick-Sower House from 8-9 a.m., plus a live chalk artist who will create a three-dimensional design at the intersection of First Avenue and Main Street.

Two stages for live entertainment will be set up — the main stage on the northeast side of the courthouse; and various musicians set up in the Gallery Garden, located in the 100 block of East Main Street.

Food trucks and local vendors will sell a variety of edible treats and a beer tent will be set up. Attendees will be allowed to stroll around with an alcoholic beverage as long as they stay within the parameters of the festival.

Because of the variety of activities, and the length of the streets the event will span, volunteers are needed to help keep the festival running smoothly.

“You can register to volunteer online in two-hour time slots and you can register for more than one,” Danielson said.

Volunteers are needed to help set up vendors, assist and supervise the kids’ activities, help take drink tickets and pour beverages (21 and older), sell raffle tickets and festival dollars, run the welcome tent and other tasks.

“The success of the festival wouldn’t be possible without the donations from our generous sponsors and a spectacular network of volunteers,” said festival co-chair Kendra Sorensen. “I’d encourage anyone that is looking for an impactful and fun way of giving back to the community to visit our website … It takes well over 100 volunteers the day of the event, and those that volunteer will receive a free T-shirt,” she said.
