Tornado by the numbers

As a tornado swept through Marshalltown on Thursday afternoon, it destroyed and damaged some of Marshalltown’s most significant structures, including businesses, government buildings and homes. Below are aerial shots of the destruction taken on July 21 and July 22.

144 miles per hour wind speeds.

738 houses and businesses affected.

477 have minor damage.

367 had major damage.

35 were destroyed.

TR PHOTO BY EMILY BARSKE Marshalltown’s JBS and Lennox facilities sit badly damaged. The two companies are among Marshalltown’s largest employers. JBS had to get rid of 13 million pounds of rotten meat. Lennox is still evaluating damage and has not announced future plans.
