‘Sensing the trend’

Marshalltown Schools moves to online student registration

T-R FILE PHOTO - In previous years, Marshalltown Community School District parents registered their children for classes in-person at a school location, such as this parent at Lenihan Intermediate School in 2017. The process is changing this year with online registration through the district’s Infinite Campus program.

The days of parents waiting to get their kids registered in a school building may be coming to a end in Marshalltown.

“We are starting the new online registration,” said Marshalltown Schools Communications Director Andrew Potter. “That’s the new thing this year … now people can access registration through the Infinite Campus portal accounts.”

Infinite Campus is a digital program used by students, school staff and parents to look up academic information, such as grades. Now, it has been expanded for parents to register their children for the next school year’s classes.

“The idea came up a few times in the past and in the last year or so we decided to move forward with this idea,” said district Instructional Design Specialist David Stanfield. “It makes it a more efficient process for everybody involved.”

As of Tuesday morning, he said over 500 registration applications had been submitted online, registering 830 students.

Previously, parents with children in more than one building had to register at different locations throughout the district. Stanfield said the online program will save families time.

“They’re doing everything in one place at one time,” he said.

Potter said the change was made because of “feedback from parents and just sensing the trend,” and that help will be available to parents.

“For new parents, we still want them to get the paper forms,” he said. “It’s all online, but the schools will be available to help as well.”

Stanfield said parents received emails from the district with information about the new online registration.

Potter said parents who need help or more information can go to their child’s school building or the Central Administration Office building, 1002 S. 3rd Ave., to get help registering online. In future years, he said the district will continue to move toward 100 percent online registration.

“We expect this year to be a learning curve year, and it’s gone well so far,” Potter said. “It will just be even quicker for them next year.”

The registration deadline is Aug. 1. For more information, call the Central Administration Office at 641-754-1000 or visit https://www.marshalltown.k12.ia.us
