With so many people in Marshalltown in need of funding to rebuild their homes, repair businesses and replace their personal effects destroyed in the July 19 tornado, the Central Iowa Art Association (CIAA) decided to organize an Art Auction For Disaster Relief, with all proceeds to benefit tornado victims.

The auction, which will consist of a silent and live, will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Elmwood Country Club. The initiative is the brainchild of CIAA board member and artist Jon Muller.

“The idea of the art auction just came to me one day thinking artists could come together and share their work. I think as an artist it’s one way we can get our work out there and share it with other people and still do something good,” he said.

Over the summer, he put out a call to artists on social media asking for donations. Since that time, over 200 pieces of artwork from all over the United States have found their way to the CIAA’s Art Center at the Fisher Community Center.

“The biggest donations came from Cline Photography. Harold Cline got hit pretty hard in the tornado and he gave us a lot of Flo Patterson pieces. Flo was a noted local artist,” CIAA Board President Bob Moore said.

Moore said the CIAA was thrilled to learn Gail Folwell would be donating a bronze statue for the auction.

“It is the biggest coup yet. She is the artist who did the ‘Drills’ display at MHS,” Moore said.

Jewelry, pottery and mixed media creations can be had, with no starting bids on the pieces.

“We don’t want cost to deter people from coming,” Moore said.

Free and open to the public, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment will be provided. Harpist Maria Galvan Wiarda will perform.

“Every nickel will go to disaster relief. There is no overhead being charged,” Moore said. “The distribution of the money raised will be determined by community need at the time of the event.”
