Flooding predicted in Marshall County

T-R PHOTO BY GARRY BRADENBURG - Mirror smooth flood water provides a reflection for a line of trees in the floodplain immediately north of Marshalltown looking southwest toward North Center Street.

Wet weather continues to swell local streams, including the Iowa River.

According to the National Weather Service, the section of river that flows to the north of Marshalltown is predicted to reach a crest of 20.8 feet Thursday. That is over a foot above the ‘minor’ flood stage for this area.

If the river reaches that predicted height, there could be consequences for the Marshalltown and Albion areas. The NWS offers a list of possible flooding concerns according to river level.

Weather service information predicts these possible consequences as the river rises over the next few days (the river level was 17.78 feet Tuesday afternoon):

• 18 feet: “Widespread agricultural and lowland flooding” may occur along Iowa Highway 330 south of Albion.

• 19 feet: Both Iowa Highway 14 north of the river and Highway 330 south of Albion could be impacted by water.

• 19.5 feet: The southbound lanes of Highway 14 north of Marshalltown flood, as does Highway 330 south of Albion.

• 20 feet: Water is predicted to approach the tops of the concrete bridge piers of the Highway 14 bridge in Marshalltown.

• 20.5 feet: Parts of Marsh Avenue, Stanley Mill Road and 160th Street near Albion flood. Water may threaten the Linn Creek overpass on Highway 330 about two miles west of Marshalltown.

• 21 feet: Highway 330 south of Albion, near Timmons Grove County Park, could be closed. Much of the park will likely flood.

Marshall County will be in a flood watch until 7 a.m. Wednesday. The area will be upgraded to a more serious flood warning beginning 5:48 a.m. Wednesday until 1 a.m. Oct. 16, according to NWS.

The flood warning will also be in affect for Black Hawk, Polk, Story and Tama counties. The weather service site recommends the “turn around, don’t drown” strategy of avoiding areas with water of unknown depth.
