One woman dead after collision near Rhodes

RHODES — A West Des Moines woman is dead after a two-vehicle collision east of Rhodes Thursday morning.

Amanda Lynne Wilken, 23, was killed as a result of the accident which occurred at 9:03 a.m. at the intersection of Durham Avenue and 295th Street according to a minimal crash report issued by the Iowa Highway Patrol Thursday afternoon.

Klarissa Noelle Penniston, 25, of Newton, was injured and taken to UnityPoint Hospital-Marshalltown.

Wilken, the driver of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, was northbound on Durham Avenue approaching 295th Street, according to the IHP report, and failed to stop at posted stop sign and was struck broadside by Penniston’s vehicle. Penniston, the driver of a 2015 Dodge Journey, was eastbound on 295th Street approaching Durham Avenue.

Assisting the IHP was the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Melbourne Fire Department and EMS, and UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown EMS.

“The loss of life is terrible,” Marshall County Sheriff Steve Hoffman said. “Any parent can easily relate to the situation.”
