Surveillance video links man to burglaries

A surveillance camera helped Marshalltown police link a local man to a string of burglaries at a commercial strip on Linn Street, according to MPD reports.

Earlier this week the MPD arrested Jimmy Allen Austgen, 49, on a host of charges ranging from burglary, theft-third degree, forgery and identity theft.

Capt. Brian Batterson of the MPD said the defendant was clearly identified by a surveillance video as a perpetrator for a string of burglaries in the Linn Street-First Street area. Video confirmed he was in the building. A search warrant was issued and police found clothing the defendant was wearing during the burglaries as well as property belonging to the businesses.

Other criminal complaints and affidavits filed in Marshall County District Court also show the defendant was charged with credit card theft and four counts of burglary-third degree. The charges violate Austgen’s parole conditions. Consequently a parole board hearing will be scheduled in the immediate future.

Preliminary hearing is 1 p.m. on Oct. 19. Bond is $5,000 cash only.
