Incumbent Fisher re-elected to Iowa House

State Rep. Dean Fisher won his fourth term as the Iowa House District 72 representative Tuesday.

The Montour farmer and Republican defeated Democratic challenger Mindy Benson, who serves as the emergency management coordinator for Tama County. Fisher won with 7,664 votes to to Benson’s 5,186 Tuesday, according to unofficial numbers from the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office.

“I feel good about my victory,” Fisher said. “I’m just going to keep representing my district as best I can.”

Fisher said his values match the district well and he looks forward to another term representing his constituents in the Iowa House.

Benson said she appreciated the chance to run for office and thanked everyone who supported her.

“No matter what, I’m going to continue to advocate for the people that I’ve met,” she said.

Benson hinted that she may run for elected office in the future.

“We’ll see what the next couple years brings,” she said.

Fisher’s platform consists of fiscally- and socially-conservative stances. He supports state government spending well below the total state budget, tax reduction and pro-life legislation, among other issues.

Fisher was first elected in 2012 after former state Rep. Lance Horbach retired from the House. Fisher held on to the seat in 2014 and 2016. The District 72 seat will be up for election once again in 2020.
