The Marshalltown Rotary Club raised over $6,000 to provide 386 winter coats to children and youth in the community. Thursday morning, Rotarians, partnering with members of the Marshalltown Fire Department, delivered the coats to local schools and agencies. Coats were shipped to the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA and club members spent time sorting the garments by size and designated school.

“We take donations to buy the coats from Operation Warm, which is a non-profit,” Rotarian Project Co-Chair Kim Jass-Ramirez said. “We reach out to the schools, talking with the nurses, counselors and social workers in the fall to find out what they feel that their needs will be and we order accordingly.”

Every school in the Marshalltown Community School District received coats, as well as St. Francis Catholic School. Some coats were also given to Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS).

All sizes, ranging from toddler to adult XXL were secured for youth in need and the coats were delivered to the various destinations via fire trucks.

“The coats that have been provided for the students in our school district have been a wonderful resource over the past several years,” Marshalltown High School Social Worker Meredith Lageschulte said. “They are nice quality coats that have been able to help keep our youth warm throughout the winter months. Rotary has been incredibly generous in this effort, both financially and with the time in coordination. Being able to watch as students receive this gift has been very special and I have been grateful to be a part of this effort.”

Steve Valbracht and Todd Steinkamp also served as project co-chairs.
