The walls came tumbling down

On Wednesday, Marshalltown Mayor Joel Greer, city staff, numerous onlookers and a Des Moines-based television crew witnessed the demolition of the privately-owned Fantles Building, Two W. Main St. It was a victim of the July 19 tornado, and one of the most photographed of all Marshalltown structures in the days following the seminal event. The building’s central location at the intersection of Main Street and South Second Street made for a dramatic and symbolic backdrop for television crews of the Central Business District and town’s devastation. Years ago, the building housed bank and then Fantles Clothing Store. Lansing Brothers of Luxemburg did the demolition.
