Fire department quickly contains house fire

No one was injured in a Marshalltown house fire Monday. The Marshalltown Fire Department was alerted to a house fire in the 500 block of Marion Street at 6:56 p.m. The 911 caller reported seeing flames coming from the roof.

Upon arrival, light smoke was discovered emanating from an attic window of a story-and-a-half house. Fire suppression crews arrived within five minutes of the call, entered the first floor of the residence and found a small fire in the ceiling at the top of the basement stairs landing. Fire crews applied a small amount of water and quickly brought the fire under control. Fire Department personnel were at the scene for approximately one hour.

The fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring in the ceiling. Marshalltown Police, UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown EMS and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
