Rhodes plans for new fire station

RHODES — The city of Rhodes and the Rhodes Fire and EMS announced the planned construction of a new fire station.

The new station will be located on the southeast corner of Main and Walnut Street. Construction is expected to begin in May 2019. The new building will feature four large overhead doors, ample space for storage, an office and a meeting room.

Rhodes and Rhodes Fire and EMS have secured much of the funding needed to complete the construction of the building. However, they are still short $180,000 of the expected cost of the project and are seeking donations.

The Rhodes Fire and EMS has outgrown its current location at 119 W. Maple St. Current storage of the vehicles and equipment often delay the response time to emergency calls, due to the vehicles being stacked in two narrow bay areas, leaders said. The current location also limits the department’s ability to host trainings and meetings for larger numbers of local and county emergency personnel.

The Rhodes Fire and EMS has been at its current location since 1980. The building was constructed in 1960.

Donations can be mailed to: Rhodes Fire Station Fund, PO Box 97, Rhodes, Iowa, 50234. More information will be released as it becomes available.
