Herb Long had a reputation for being one of the kindest, nicest, hardest working men you’d ever want to meet. He had a deep faith, great smile and a quick wit. After a long, 14 year, battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Herb died October 28, 2016, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born June 7, 1939, in Marshalltown, Iowa to Clarence and Wilda (Renbarger) Long.
Herb graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1958. He then attended Marshalltown Junior Collage and State College of Iowa (UNI) where he earned his BA. Herb did graduate work at UNI and UWL. His first job after graduation was for Mason City School District where he taught Elementary Physical Education for 3 years. In 1967, he accepted a position with the La Crosse School District, where he taught Elementary Physical Education until his retirement in 1998.
On June 15, 1968, Herb married the love of his life, Judy Piper, at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa; and they were married for 48 years. They lived in La Crosse for two years and then moved to West Salem in 1971.
Herb was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, on church council, along with many other roles. Because of his love of Mustangs, Herb was instrumental in starting the Western Wisconsin Performance Ford and Mustang Club. He started the La Crosse Wizard’s Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Team in 1994. He was a village trustee for six years serving on various committees for the Village of West Salem. Herb played a large part in the growth of the West Salem Hockey Association. He previously served as Association President, coached the first West Salem High School WIAA hockey team, and other youth teams. Its no wonder his son and daughter played and now his grandchildren. Herb and his daughter, spent many hours sharing in their love of horses.
Herb is survived by his wife, Judy; three children: son, Chad (Carla) Long, and daughters, Jill (Kenny) Lewter, and Lory (Shaun) Kneifl; grandchildren: Zachary and Mallory Long, Jayda and Kamden Lewter; step-grandson, Kenneth Lewter, III, Laney, Layla, and Beau Kneifl; one brother, Ron (Vickie) Long; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Jackie Schultz; nieces and nephews and many friends and relatives.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; mother-in-law and father-in-law and many aunts and uncles.
