Dale LaVerne Roseland
Dale LaVerne Roseland passed away on Thursday evening, July 13, 2017 at Grandview Heights Rehab & Healthcare in Marshalltown, IA. He had resided there since April of 2016. His wife Erma & many family members soon arrived to be at Dale’s side.
Dale was born on Nov 1, 1934 at the family farm home near the small town of Dunbar, IA to parents, Arthur & Ida Kjormoe Roseland. He had 5 older siblings: Myron, Norma, Wendell, Dorothy Mae & Donald.
He began his schooling at the age of 5 in First Grade at the Dunbar school. Many of his school mates were first cousins & nieces & nephews. He enjoyed his school years of learning & being with the other kids. When he became old enough to be a part of the Dunbar Vikings boys basketball team he found his real niche. Dale earned a First Team position on the All Marshall County Boys Basketball Team all 4 years of high school. He was very proud of that. Dale graduated in May of 1952 along with 5 other classmates.
Dale received a scholarship to play basketball at a college in western Iowa, but chose to remain on the farm working there & for a cousin. But, that didn’t keep him from playing basketball! He played on county independent teams for many years. He was always an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, even though 3 of his 4 children attended Iowa State!
Dale met Erma Jean Nelson while they were both in high school. While Dale was playing basketball for Dunbar, Erma was a cheerleader for the rival team from Gilman High. They dated for 4 years & were married on June 5th of 1954 at the Community Church in Gilman. To this union were born 5 children, Richard Dale, Dan Eugene, Sherry Kay, Brian Arthur, & Michael Craig. The couple’s first home in 1954 was the little tenant house on the farmstead which they began renting 2 years later in 1956. In time they moved to the larger house on the property where they lived for 59 years & which was home to their children.
Farming the land & raising cattle & sometimes hogs too, was Dale’s chosen vocation & what he loved to do. Dale & all the children participated in showing cattle at the county & state fair & many other shows. Dale had the Grand Champion 4-H steer back in 1951 & his kids also earned that & similar honors years later.
Dale served as co-leader for the Dunbar Rustlers 4-H Club for 15 years. He also was a board member on the Marshall County Cattlemen’s Association & participated in all their activities, including working at the “beef tent” at the IA State Fair. Other interests over the years included pheasant, deer & elk hunting, water & snow skiing, croquet & pool with family & friends, as he was an avid & competitive sportsman. He also loved neighborhood volleyball parties.
As many farmers had done, Dale too took second jobs in town. He first worked nights at Gra-Iron Foundry for 2 1/2 years & then worked full time for over 10 years carpentering for ARRO Construction. When Dale’s many years of hard work on the farm caught up with him & his health failed, the decision was made to sell the farm & move to The Embers in Marshalltown. What a change that was, but family & friends continued to bring much joy to Dale’s life.
The Ferguson Bible Church has been Dale’s place of worship for many years. Now his life has ended & he was ready to go home to the Lord.
Dale is survived by his wife of 63 years, Erma, & their 5 children: Richard Roseland (Gail) of Idaho Falls, ID, Dan Roseland (Diane) of Sonoma, CA, Sherry Benson (Rod) of State Center, IA, Brian Roseland (Becky) of Ankeny, IA, & Michael Roseland of Grinnell, IA. Grandchildren include: Brandon Benson (Kim) & children Greta & Clara, Alyssa Randall (Joel) & children Olivia, Ella, Nora & Jackson, Alarie Crouch (Joe) & children Carson, Camden & Cora, Blake Benson (Brittney) & children Addisen, Beau & Bia, Rachel Habib (Peter) & son Judah, Brett Roseland (Kasey), Laura Roseland, Spenser Zegers (fiancÈ Jessica), Callie Zegers, Keaton Roseland, John Sanders (Robyn) & children Rachael, Cassidy & Addison, & Amy Sargis & son Zack.
He was preceded in death by his parents Art & Ida Roseland, his in-laws Bernie & Betty Nelson, brothers & sisters Myron Roseland (Anna), Norma Kellogg (Acil), Wendell Roseland (Lois), Dorothy Mae Hauser (George), & Donald Roseland (Colleen), as well as many beloved nephews, nieces & cousins.
Visitation will be Tues, July 18th at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown from 5-7 PM. The funeral will be on Wed, July 19th at 10:30 AM also at Mitchell. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery following the service. A lunch will follow at noon at Ferguson Bible Church.
