Duane was born February 18, 1934, in Marshalltown. He was the younger son of Charles W. and Ellen J. (LaValley) Bulanek. He received his education in the Marshalltown Public School System, graduating from Marshalltown High School in 1953. Duane worked at Fisher Controls as a machine operator from his senior year of high school until he was drafted into the Army in 1957. Duane was honored to serve his country in Korea in the Signal Corp. While in the service, he earned certification in Field Radio Repair. When he completed his deployment to Korea in 1959, he returned to employment at Fisher Controls. He joined the newly formed Electronics Group in which he worked until he retired in 1992 after 40 years of service at Fisher Controls. After his retirement, Duane consulted for a short time at Ritchie Industries in Conrad and then started working at Paragon International in Nevada (formerly GMI Industries in Union) where he recently completed 25 years of service in his “retirement job.” Duane was still working part-time as an electrical engineer at Paragon until the time of his death.
On May 11, 1963, Duane was united in marriage to S. Dianne McCormack at First Baptist (Temple) Church in Marshalltown. They lived in the same house from the time they were married until their deaths. Duane was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of First Baptist Church for over 30 years and has been a member of Marshalltown Evangelical Free Church for 22 years. He served as an audio engineer for over 40 years for his churches and for singing groups which included ‘The Sonlights’ and ‘Reflection.’ He also installed and upgraded sound systems in area churches.
Duane was a master handyman. He could do mechanical, electrical and automotive repair, and he used these gifts to help family and friends. He also enjoyed electronics projects. Additionally, photography was a hobby of Duane’s for many years.
Duane is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughters, Lisa (Christopher) Paschen, of North Saint Paul, MN and Lynne (Patrick) Rundall, of Ames, IA; grandchildren Lauren Paschen, Hannah (Tristan) Sagastume, Colin Paschen, and Sarah Rundall; a brother, Nyle (Betty) Bulanek, of Marshalltown, and a brother-in-law, Gary (Linda) McCormack, of Cedar Falls, IA; one niece, five nephews and several cousins.
Duane is preceded in death by his wife in 2002 and his parents.
