William Charles “Bill” Gross


William Charles “Bill” Gross, of Marshalltown, IA, left the earth Tuesday, November 14, 2017, and rejoined the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Linda (Mansfield) Gross. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 20, 2017, at Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W. Main St., Marshalltown. Bill was born January 7, 1942, in Elmhurst, IL, to Leon and Ester Marie (Ortenstone) Gross. He graduated from Downers Grove High School, attended Northern Illinois University, Walton School of Business and DePaul University. He received a BA in Accounting and passed his CPA exam in 1963. Bill was united in marriage to Linda Sue Mansfield on June 1, 1963. During his professional career, he served as a staff Auditor at Buckles & Company, Audit Manager at Wolf & Company, Controller at Hoyne Savings & Loan and he retired as Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the Marshalltown Savings Bank. Bill was extremely involved in his community as evidenced by the leadership roles in which he was elected or appointed. Bill was president, treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors at Elmwood Country Club. He was treasurer, a member of the Board of Directors and an ambassador of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce. Bill was a charter member and first treasurer of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He served as a member of the Board of the Trustees of the YWCA and was a member of the finance committee for the Community Y. Bill was a member of the Rotary International Club for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Iowa and Illinois societies of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Board of Directors for the Savings and Loan Services of Des Moines. He was extremely proud of his two grandchildren, William and Brynn Van Buren. He enjoyed watching, supporting and cheering as they achieved great successes. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and fishing with his brother, Dan.

Bill is survived by his three daughters: Michelle Standiford, of Highlands Ranch, CO, D’Anne (Michael) Kroemer, of Clinton, IA, Heather (Dr. Stephen) Van Buren, of Marshalltown; his two amazing grandchildren, William and Brynn Van Buren; and a brother, Daniel (Irene) Gross, of Ft. Collins, CO.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda (Mansfield) Gross.
