Joan McGehee, 91

Joan McGehee, 91, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at the church. Joan was born May 15, 1926, to Joseph Adams and Theresa Bettin. She attended St. Mary’s School. Joan was united in marriage to John McGehee January 4, 1945, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. While John was in the service, Joan attended the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines, IA. She bought a beauty salon in Gilman while John was in the service and worked there for six years. When John came home, they moved back to Marshalltown and they built their first home. Joan worked at Marshalltown Manor as a beautician for 20 years and at Pursel-Davis as their beautician for over 50 years. In 1956, John and Joan were blessed with their son, David. Joan volunteered countless hours as the originator and manager of the St. Henry Gift Shop-a true blessing to the Catholic community. Also, Joan volunteered at the Iowa Veteran’s Home and the Marshalltown Area Medical Center. Joan belonged to Ave Maria Study Club, Elk Ladies, and Alter and Rosary Society. She enjoyed playing cards, camping and fishing with David and many friends, golfing, bowling, and gardening.

Joan is survived by her goddaughters, Peggy Raub, of Omaha, NE, Marcia (Tim) Shore, of Marshalltown, and their children, Ryan, Alli and Lindsay; several nieces and nephews; 30 plus relatives in Washington; and countless dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John on May 1, 2015; a son, David; three brothers, Joe, Bill and David; and two sisters, Rosemary and Diana and three nephews, Daniel, James and Gregory.
