Bob Atha, 80

Bob Atha, 80, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away on January 11, 2018, in Houston, Texas. Bob was born in Chariton, Iowa, and started working as a Hy-Vee grocery boy at age 15. Bob attended Drake University and received his undergraduate and graduate degree in business. Commandant Ward Loftus hired Bob as Iowa Veterans Home business manager in the Early 60s. Bob was active in several community organizations and elected chairman of the Iowa State Institutions Business Manager’s organization several times throughout the years. In 1999, Bob decided, after 37 years as business manager, it was time to retire and spend full time (along with his wife Donna) to horticulture and manage their apple orchard (Appleberry Farm) in Marshalltown. They created the orchard in 1982.

His other interests included fishing, golfing, photography, woodworking and family. Bob assisted the Iowa Veterans Home experience a significant change in it’s services by removing the old post civil war buildings and creating newer facilities during the years and experiencing its growth to a modern health care facility.

Per his wishes, no public services are being held and internment will take place at a later time.

Bob is survived by his wife, Donna, and sons: Mark, Iowa City, Stuart, Venice, Florida, and Paul, Bellaire, Texas; step daughter Renee Mathews, Austin, Texas, and stepson Doug Sebetka, Marshalltown. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two great-qrandchildren.
