Gertrud H. Tammen, 86, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 4, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W. Main Street, in Marshalltown. Visitation will be Thursday, January 4, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., until the time of the services at Anderson Funeral Homes. Gertrud was born on June 24, 1931, to Otto and Ida (Bochum) Schakat in Kaukehmen, East Prussia, Germany. She was raised in Tilsit, East Prussia, through age 13 until the end of World War II when her family fled from the invading Russian Army. They lived in refugee camps before settling in Leer, Germany, where her future husband lived. Gertud graduated high school in Leer and later completed nursing school there. In 1953, her fiancee, Frank Tammen, immigrated to the U.S. In 1954, Gertrud immigrated and moved to Marshalltown. She and Frank were united in marriage on December 18, 1954, in Wellsburg, IA. She gained her United States citizenship in 1962. In her early years, Gertrud worked as a nurse at the Deaconess Hospital and Westwood Nursing Home in Marshalltown. She then worked for podiatrist Dr. Ray Samuel for many years before her retirement. Gertrud enjoyed knitting, reading, classical music, keeping up on the news and world events and spending time at the family cabin in Minnesota.

Gertrud will be dearly missed by her three daughters: Dorie Tammen, of Marshalltown, Ingrid (Jim) Haase, of Morris, IL, and Linda (Bryan Fogg) Tammen, of Ames, IA; five grandchildren: Sam Brennecke, of Marshalltown, Erin Faulkner and Kelly (Steve) Daniells, of Chicago, IL, Josh (Amber) Courter, of Melbourne, IA, and Kadie Osgood, of Ames; two great-grandchildren: Gordy Daniells and Gavin Courter; a sister, Eva Krueger ,of Friedrichshafen, Germany; a brother-in-law, Wilfried Tammen, of Germany; a niece Irene De Stefano, of Germany, and a nephew, Roland Krueger, of Germany. She is also survived by her dog, Heidi, and her cat, Mac.

Gertrud was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, Otto and Ida and a nephew, Reinhard Krueger.
