Avis Dyer Riggins Peterson Rayfield, 93

Avis Dyer Riggins Peterson Rayfield, daughter of Joab and Gracie Dyer, passed away on December 31, 2017, in Mountain View, MO. She was born September 2, 1924, at Alley Springs, MO and was 93 at the time of her passing.

Avis married Fredrick Gerald Riggins in March 1946. The couple had 3 children: Marilyn Kay, Ronald Clarence and Frederick Joe. Widowed in 1959, Avis married Arco (Pete) Peterson January 1965. The following year the family moved from southern California to Whitten, IA where the Petersons ran the Mis’Steak House, a popular and well known restaurant.

After Pete’s death in 1988, Avis returned to her roots in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. In May 1993, Avis married James Swiney Rayfield, of Eminence, MO. The couple lived in Swiney’s home with a beautiful view of a lake and the Ozark mountains, where Avis continued to live after Swiney passed away in 1999.

Avis is preceded in death by her parents, her spouses, 3 brothers (Glen, William and Shelby Dyer) along with 2 sisters (Helen Eckler and Ruth Patterson).

She is survived by her children: Marilyn Gatrelle (Ron, deceased), of Goose Creek, SC, Ron Riggins (Kay), of Ankeny, IA and Fred Riggins (Janet), of Woodbury, MN; stepsons Michael (Mick) Peterson (Jill, deceased), of Monrovia, CA, Rick Peterson (Elaine), of Marshalltown, Suzanne (Rayfield) Chilton (Dan), of Bella Vista, AR, Jennifer (Rayfield) Hurt, of Salem, MO; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great grandchildren; and her sister Mabel Wilkins.

Service for Avis was held January 3, 2018, at Bradford Funeral Home in Summersville, MO. Interment was in the Dyer Family Cemetery in Shannon County, MO.
