Larry Thomas Laverty, Sr.

Larry Laverty, 78, of Marshalltown, passed away May 7, 2018, after a short illness.

He was born September 27, 1939, and was the only child of Glatha and Thomas Laverty in Laurel, Iowa. He enjoyed early fame by winning the Healthiest Baby trophy at the Iowa State Fair when he was two years old.

He attended Laurel High School and continued his education at Iowa State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He was married to the love of his life, Kay Louise Sheeley in 1961. She left life before him in 2003.

Larry is survived by his four children, assorted grandchildren and a few great grandchildren. Alana Laverty Latchaw (Graham Latchaw) and her children Michael, Chandra (mother of Romy and Leroy), and Farren; Megan Laverty Brubaker (William Brubaker) and their children Kelsey, Elliott and Grayson; Larry Thomas Laverty Jr. (Kimberly Laverty) and his children Lora, Robert and Lindsey and Wynne Laverty Brothers, mother of Alexander and Marissa, with Alex preceding his grandfather in death.

Larry Laverty farmed for many years in Laurel, Iowa. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved being a part of the Tallcorn Cruisers, taking many trips in his FJ Cruiser to go four-wheeling in places like Moab, Utah. He was even featured in several magazines, and was especially proud of having his FJ on the cover of a Tallcorn Cruisers issue.

He enjoyed traveling, he enjoyed going to national parks, camping and trout fishing. He loved all things scientific and rational, always staying up to date on the latest gadgets and technology. Larry was active with Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, several conservation groups, politics and he was a big fan of the “Walking Dead.”

Larry also enjoyed music, always playing loud rock while driving, and he enjoyed attending numerous concerts. With his varied interests and a love of intelligent conversation Larry was a fun and fascinating man to hang out with.

Larry will be cremated and there will be celebration of his life at the Mitchell Funeral Home on Saturday May 12 from 3 to 5 p.m.
