Born on Groundhog’s day of 1919 (February 2nd), at Melbourne, IA, she was the daughter of Edward and Lydia (Wintermeier) Pfile. She was the last of seven children surviving. Mildred graduated from the Chilicothe Business College in Missouri. For twelve years she worked in Freeport Illinois. For over 50 years, she faithfully worked at McGregor Furniture, filling book keeping requirements and making many friends along the way.

At nearly 53 years of age, she married for the first time- a handsome gentleman by the name of Clark Heckert. They were blessed with nearly 20 years of marriage before his passing in 1991. When she knew Clark was ill, she learned to drive and obtained her driver’s license. She was devoted to taking care of him.

Mildred was a woman of God and was dedicated to her church. She served as church secretary, director of the newsletter, treasurer and was a faithful helper for the rummage sale. No one could forget her being in charge of the cinnamon rolls. In later years, she devoted her time in the church wherever she could assist and often helped with pot lucks and funeral lunches. She enjoyed being a member of the Order of Eastern Star, flower gardening and cooking- but time spent with family and friends was precious.

Mildred was blessed with a step-son, Ramon Heckert; step-grandchildren- David Heckert (Sue), Sue (Ken) Mitchell and Nancy Allen; 8 step-great-grandchildren and nephew Lawrence (Carol) Harsha and Barb (Marvin) Hawkins as well as great-nieces and nephews and her Bickford Cottage family.

In death, Mildred rejoined her parents, six siblings and step-children Joan Steele, Donald Heckert and stepdaughter-in-law Helen Heckert.

Mildred’s family would like to extend their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to the Bickford Family for the loving care given to her while she lived there, and for making Mildred’s last years memorable and comfortable. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
