Craig Laverne Spencer, Sr., 77

Craig Laverne Spencer, Sr., 77, of Marshalltown, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 11th at home with his wife by his side and under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Craig was born September 30, 1940, in Marshalltown to Scott Calvin and Daisy Johnson Spencer. Craig attended school in Marshalltown and was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in football and track. A tremendous source of pride at his death, Craig continues to hold a 58-year MHS track & field long-jump record of 22 feet 10 1/2 inches, accomplished well before advances in sports training. Graduating with the Class of 1960, “fleet-footed Spencer” accepted a football scholarship to Southern Baptist University in Louisiana; however, after witnessing southern hospitality at its worst, the racial tensions and tipped buses brought Craig back to his hometown before the first football season ended.

Craig applied at Fisher Controls on a Monday and started work the very next day. He retired from the Center Street plant in December 2002 after more than 41 years. In retirement, Craig loved to play darts, horseshoes, pool and watch the Chicago bears — preferably with a Schlitz in his hand!

Craig is survived by his wife of more than 23 years, Carol; his children Craig Jr, Tara, Justin and Jermaine; stepchildren Jody and Shawn, and several grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Julian and many nieces and nephews.

Craig was welcomed to his heavenly home by his parents; brothers Calvin, Clyde, Claude, Frank, Marvin, Wayne, Leonard and Lawrence; sisters Pearl, Daisy and Barbara; son Stephen Cory and beloved pets Tiny and Eclair.

While no public services are planned at this time, memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later time. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com; the Mitchell family Funeral Home is caring for Craig and his family.
