Charles “Chuck” L. Brierley, 92

Charles “Chuck” L. Brierley, 92, of Marshalltown, IA, formerly of Green Mountain, IA and the Embers, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2018, at the United Church of Christ in Green Mountain. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 30, 2018, at Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Arrangements were entrusted to Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Green Mountain United Church of Christ or the Iowa River Hospice. Chuck was born August 30, 1926, to Louis and Bessie (Kidd) Brierley in LeGrand, IA. He graduated from Green Mountain Community High School in 1944. On December 8, 1944, he enlisted in the Marines. Chuck was sworn in at Fort Snelling in Minnesota and attended boot camp at Paris Island, SC, before being sent to Camp Lejeune, NC. From there, he traveled cross country on a troop train to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. He left for overseas in April 1945, spending the first 10 months in Guam and then seven months in China. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Chuck was united in marriage to Lorna “Skip” Anderson on June 10, 1951, in Beaman, IA. He first worked for the local elevator and then for Harlan Bucholz at the Skelly Station in Green Mountain. In 1954, Chuck and Skip purchased the garage and ran it until 1965. He then started his career as a draftsman for Fisher Controls, retiring in 1992. In 1998, they moved into the Embers and spent 17 years there. During their marriage, Chuck and Skip traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe. Their biggest adventure being a six-week driving trip to Alaska. In the past, Chuck served as a board member of the United Church of Christ in Green Mountain. He also served on the Green Mountain Community School Board.

Chuck is survived by his two daughters, Linda (Sandi) Brierley, of West Des Moines and Carol (Kent) Loney, of Marshalltown; six grandchildren: Laura (Josh) Gould, Jeanne (Gary) Orstad, Heather (Chris) Reitenbaugh, Stephanie Windom, Michelle Yakel, Nathan Struve; 12 great grandchildren; his sister, Darlene (Bud) Hays, of Brainerd, MN; his brother, Darrel Weitzell, of Jefferson, TX; his brother-in-law, Bob Anderson, of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Skip, of 61 years; his parents; his granddaughter, Tricia Loney; his sister, Dorothy McConnell and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Keegan.
