Roland Dahms, 89

Roland Dahms, 89, of Gladbrook, IA, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook. Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the Gladbrook Chapel of Anderson Funeral Homes. Roland Adolph Dahms was born May 23, 1929, to Adolph and Anna (Reimers) Dahms on the family farm at Gladbrook. He attended country school and graduated from Gladbrook High School with the class of 1947. On August 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joyce Ellen Stauffer at the home of her parents in Gladbrook, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Kenneth, Kirk and Jayne. Roland was employed by Gethmann’s Iowa Builders Supply for 46 years. He was a member of the Park Hill Church of God and served 35 years as Deacon. Roland was active in many facets of the Gladbrook community including Badger Hill Cemetery Board, Westbrook Acres Board, Gladbrook Chamber of Commerce, Gladbrook Alumni Association, Sunday School teacher, Town and Country Building Corporation, Meals of Wheels, Gladbrook Welcome Wagon, Gladbrook Building and Zoning Commissioner, Gladbrook Water Board and Trees Forever. He served as assistant policeman for 20 years and served on the Gladbrook Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, serving as Assistant Fire Chief for two years and Secretary-Treasurer for six years. Roland was very proud to have served as a Civil Defense volunteer for three years, protecting his beloved town and the citizens of Gladbrook in war time. His hobbies included tennis, fishing, hunting, collecting antiques and traveling to visit family and friends. He also enjoyed an early morning friendly game of Schafkopf at Schades.’

Roland is survived by his loving wife Joyce Dahms; his children, Kenneth (Betty) Dahms, Gladbrook; Kirk Dahms, Gladbrook; and Jayne (David ) Heath, Alexandria, Louisiana. Four grandchildren, Molly, Abby, Riley and Allison. Five great grandchildren, Drake, Jasmin, Tylin, Danyelle and Jakob. Two great great grandchildren, Eli and Kinsley. A sister, Marilyn Green, of Cedar Falls, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Vernon Dahms.
