Information you need about property taxes

The property tax statements payable in 2016-17 were mailed to Marshall County property owners this past week.

The Marshall County Treasurer’s Office is certified to collect $52.82 million in property taxes (does not include excise tax from utility companies). Depending on where you live, your tax dollars are distributed to your city or township, your school district, Marshall County, Community College District, Assessor, Ag Extension and the State of Iowa. A detailed tax distribution breakdown is located at the bottom of your tax statement. Here is a quick look at the largest pieces of the total pie for this year:

Marshalltown School District: $16.24 million

Marshall County: $12.45 million

City of Marshalltown: $11.08 million

Iowa Valley Community College District: $7.74 million

East Marshall School District: $3.23 million

West Marshall School District: $2.69 million

Notable changes from last year are three different rollback rates. The Residential/Ag Dwelling rollback decreased from 55.7 percent to 55.6 percent. The Ag Land rollback increased from 44.7 percent to 46.1 percent. A new classification of property for the 2016-17 collection year is the multi-residential rollback, which is set at 86.25 percent (Taxable value is determined by assessed value multiplied by the rollback. The rollback is computed by the Iowa Department of Revenue and is determined by the market of the class of property).

To simplify, what makes my total amount of property taxes due, go up or down? Several factors can cause a change in your taxes due including, the rollback, assessed value, tax rate, change in property tax askings from the tax district, or a change in a tax credit amount. Study your tax statement. Find the comparisons from previous years and the breakdown of how your taxes were calculated.

Lastly, this is your local government at work. Your local government officials vote on budgets that determine how much of your hard earned dollars fund your government services. If there are changes in rates or tax askings from your taxing entity that please you or discourage you, let your voice be heard. We have a representative government from school boards, city councils, to county supervisors and they are there to represent you. They need to know your thoughts on how your government is functioning as a guide for them in their decision making.
