Early experiences build school readiness

With spring here and summer around the corner, now is a great time to provide outdoor educational experiences for young children. Walks to the park, climbing on equipment and hopping down the sidewalk help young children with balance and coordination. Toddlers and preschoolers are learning new things each day and the more opportunities to explore the world around them, the more they will grow.

Social, emotional and physical development are essential to being prepared to become a kindergarten student and life-long learner. Reading stories, singing songs, and reciting nursery rhymes help build pre-literacy skills. Playing with other children and learning to share and cooperate build important social skills.

Technology in moderation is also very important. It can be difficult for a young child to distinguish between reality and fantasy. Before downloading apps, check to see if it’s rated safe for young children.

Every Marshalltown elementary school has a district preschool program. There are morning and afternoon sessions available and busing has been added. Additionally, Head Start and community partners have programs available for children.

Attending a preschool program can help set a positive routine of being a student. If you have concerns or questions about your child’s development, please talk to your family doctor or contact Central Rivers AEA. And lastly, don’t forget to enjoy this special time in your child’s life.
