In praise of Jack Dack

Upon picking up my Times-Republican today, I was so very happy to see Representative Mark Smith’s beautiful tribute to Mr. Jack Dack, long-time Commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home who recently passed away. Mr. Dack was the most dedicated public servant and friend of veterans that I have ever known. For 30 years, it was my honor and privilege, along with many hundreds of other Iowa Veterans Home (IVH) employees, to work under the inspired and caring leadership of this humble and visionary man. He was tireless in his service and commitment to not only updating and renewing the campus, but he also built staffing and programming for veterans services that were the best in the nation. He had a great HEART and he gave away as much of it as he could. The IVH, Iowa’s veterans, and the nation have lost a great champion who did so much good.
