Mixed messages

I’m in a bit of a quandary. Recent ads in the T-R promote a rally on April 24 sponsored by the Not In Our Town movement focusing on bettering race relations. On the surface it sounds like a good cause to support – the world would be a better place if we all just got along, right? On the other hand I must heed the constant nanny warnings of those who insist that I be politically correct, and the current political climate dictates that our new PC is at odds with this ideal. Most Iowans recently affirmed their choice of a political leadership system that is based upon petty bickering, lies, character assassination, misogyny, condescension, bullying and a general lack of critical thinking. These same people now expect us to rally around an organization specifically devoted to educating our young people to not only tolerate, but celebrate the differences in our ideas and cultures. This makes me wonder whether a good PC Iowan can even support such a radical, non-PC organization like NIOT. It seems that we preach a Sunday message and practice a Saturday night lifestyle. Thus, my dilemma: Should I act as Iowa society advises I do or should I do the right thing? Decisions, decisions …
