Marshalltown has lost a model citizen
One of the finest men it’s ever been my privilege to know passed away recently and his loss will leave a void in many lives here in Marshalltown. His community service was legendary and his ability to make friends from all walks of life was uncanny. Kevin Lageschulte was a dynamo in many ways. He volunteered for so many activities, I would see him working for two or three different clubs in one day and think he had at least one clone helping him with all of that work. Whether he was announcing a track meet, wrestling meet or helping with Special Olympics, Kevin always kept up an incredibly upbeat attitude. His work with the Lions Club, Kiwanis and the community theater took up countless hours and yet he always seemed to have time to talk with his friends and be with his family. He was a model citizen and a man to emulate. I will miss him terribly, as will all of us who knew him.
This Saturday, a memorial will be held for Kevin at the Martha Ellen Tye Theater, where Kevin spent countless hours over the past 35 years building sets, rehearsing roles and just helping out in any way he could. He loved the Marshalltown Community Theater. He loved the people who worked in the theater like they were his own family. And, in many ways, they were. He certainly spent more time with them than many other people spend with their real families. The theater is a fitting place to say goodbye to Kevin and to remember his remarkable life.
Kevin was rich in friends. He was loved by those who knew him and will leave an empty place in our lives. Kevin wouldn’t want us to grieve too long, though. He would want us to go on with our lives and volunteer to help someone else. No one can replace Kevin, but we can try to pick up some of the load he leaves behind. He would want us to volunteer more, help out in the theater more, even if it is just attending a play, and to be part of making Marshalltown a better community. I for one, will try, and I know I will be a better man for it. Goodbye, Kevin. Thanks for everything.
