Oktemberfest around the corner

August 30, 2011 - Bennet Goldstein
Don’t look now but Marshalltown’s annual Oktemberfest is just a few weeks away. The festival will return Sept. 22 through 25 and look for preview coverage in a future edition of the Times-Republican.

The festival will kick off with a few of my favorite events including the crowning of Little Miss and Mr. Oktemberfest and the kids fun run. The run is always good for a few laughs as many young kids have T-shirts on that fit like dresses as they motor down the road. Sure there, are a few scrapes sometimes from minor wipeouts, but most end the race with a smile.

Of course, the car show, spaghetti dinner, parade, and live music will also return this year. Let’s hope the rain holds off this year for the parade. Last year’s was a wet mess that got increasingly wetter as time went on. Anybody else have any favorite Oktemberfest events or memories?
