On the hunt
March 27, 2012 - Pam Rodgers
Five years ago when my brother was looking to buy a house in Marshalltown, I was dragged along on the house hunt. What I thought would be a boring day, turned out to be rather informative. I was glad that I had been included enough to give opinions on which house James should buy (for the record it was the very first one we looked at).
Now, this weekend I got to repeat the whole experience again as my sister is on the house hunt in Chariton. For the past three years, she has been renting a basement apartment from a very nice lady. Her landlord, or roommate as she likes to say, has decided to sell her house to try and cut back on expenses.
The house is too large for Trish to afford on a teacher’s salary so she’s now in the market for a small house on her own. She would like to rent because while she loves where she’s at, she doesn’t know if she will stay there forever. But she wanted to keep her options open, so the first step was to look at the houses available right now.
On Saturday, Trish, our parents, brother and I spent the whole day with a very nice realtor by the name of Cheryl who took us around Chariton to view houses in Trish’s price range. There were some real “fixer-uppers,” and there were some that just needed a little work. The last house we went to was the best, she could move in next month and have no big projects that would need to be dealt with. If she had to buy a house tomorrow, it’s the one she would go with.
But for now, she’s continues to be on the look out for the perfect home for her. I was happy to go along and help give my perspective on the house-hunt. I know that she really doesn't want to move, but circumstances aren't going to change any time soon. I just hope she can find what works best for her.
