New Iowa 2-deeps show big youth movement
August 24, 2012 - Andy Heintz
The latest Iowa Hawkeye football 2-deeps are out, and the Hawkeyes are showing plenty of youth in the top tier of their lineups.
Some of the usual suspects we expected to see in there are present, including QB James Vandenberg, WRs Keenan Davis and Kevonte Martin-Manley and TE C.J. Fiedorowicz. Their backups right now are Jake Rudock, freshman Jacob Hillyer and Steven Staggs and freshman TE Ray Hamilton.
The offensive line starters are tackles Brett Van Sloten and Brandon Scherff, guards Austin Blythe and Matt Tobin and center James Ferentz. The backups are tackles Andrew Donnal and Nolan MacMillan, guards Jordan Walsh and Eric Simmons and center Connor Boffeli. Five of the 10 players listed on the depth chart are either freshmen or sophomores and eight players will be back next season.
At running back, sophomore Damon Bullock is listed as the starter and freshmen Greg Garmon and Michael Mallory are listed as his backups. Sophomore Mark Weisman -- a bit of an unknown -- is listed as the team's starting FB with Brad Rogers and Jonathan Gimm listed as the backups. However, Rogers has missed time in camp and will likely become the starter as the season nears.
On defense, the expected three starters at linebacker are there in James Morris, Christian Kirksey and Anthony Hitchens. The backups in those positions are freshman Travis Perry, sophomore Marcus Collins and either freshman Quinton Alston or freshman Macon Plewa.
The secondary has three expected players in the starting lineup in cornerbacks Micah Hyde and B.J. Lowery and safety Tanner Miller. The twist in the armor in the secondary is at the other secondary position as many felt sophomore Nico Law would start. Right now, both Law and senior Tommy Donatell are listed as co-starters.
The DL is expected to be a work in progress all season. The DTs listed as starters right now are Louis Trinca-Pasat and Carl Davis, both of which are sophomores. Their backups are freshman Darian Cooper and sophomore Mike Hardy. The starters at DE are still undecided but head coach Kirk Ferentz lists seniors Steve Bigach and Joe Gaglione at one side and Bigach and junior Dominic Alvis at the other. The backup at both defensive ends spots is redshirt freshman Melvin Spears.
The 2-deeps include 13 freshmen and 14 sophomores. This team is very young. The coaching staff has been changed. Many fans should give this team a pass on getting past seven wins. But the schedule still lines up for this team to get to 9-3 or 8-4. Only time will tell in whether or not these young bucks are ready for action.
