Iowa women release non-conference hoops schedule

August 30, 2012 - Troy Hyde
The Iowa women's basketball team will be challenged early and often this upcoming non-conference season. And that is just what the team needs to advance to its sixth straight NCAA Tournament.

Seeking its sixth straight trip to the Big Dance and its sixth straight 20-win season, the Iowa women's basketball team announced Thursday that the Hawkeye ladies will play 13-14 non-conference games this season. And at least 11 of those games will come against opposition who advanced to postseason play last year.

Iowa is scheduled to play 13 games but could pick up a 14th game if it can go 3-0 in the Preseason WNIT Tournament.

The Hawkeyes will start off the new season against Northern Illinois in the Preseason WNIT Tournament at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Nov. 9. Iowa is guaranteed two more games on Nov. 11 and Nov. 14 and if its win all three contest, the Hawkeyes would then play a fourth game a few days later.

The two biggest events of the non-conference schedule will come in the Thanksgiving Classic Tournament in Miami and the Surf N Slam Classic in San Diego.

In Miami, Iowa will face 2012 WNIT representative and host Florida International on Nov. 23 and then will play either West Virginia or LSU on Nov. 25.

Both West Virginia and LSU were NCAA Tournament teams last year after winning 24 and 23 games, respectively.

The tournament in San Diego runs during the winter holiday break and will see the Hawkeyes taking on NCAA representative Texas on Dec. 28 and then either Central Michigan or San Diego in the second game. Both Central Michigan and San Diego won 20 games last year and advanced to the WNIT.

The three instate games will be played in succession starting on Dec. 1 when Iowa hosts WBI champion Northern Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Cyclones come to town on Dec. 6 and then the Hawkeyes travel to Drake on Dec. 16.

Iowa State advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, while the Bulldogs were a part of the WNIT Tournament.

Also on the non-conference schedule is a road trip to Florida State as the Hawkeyes have a date with the Seminoles as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Florida State returns 11 of its 12 players from last year.

Other non-conference games this season include a home contest against Robert Morris on Nov. 20 and a home date with Missouri State on Dec. 19.

Iowa returns a plethora of players from last year, including leading scorer Jaime Printy, second leading scorer Morgan Johnson and double-double machine Samantha Logic.
