Support Toys for Tots
December 10, 2012 - Mike Donahey
Since 1775 U.S. Marines have been at the ready to defend America’s freedoms.
Add looking after America’s needy children at Christmas. Right now the Marine’s Toys for Tots program is making sure Santa has enough in his sack to give out to every boy and girl — especially if they are underprivileged.
The program has been a staple in Marshalltown and central Iowa for years. Many an area business has set out boxes for generous Marshalltownians to place new, unwrapped toys. In Marshalltown, they can be found at Fareway, Farmers Savings Bank, Hy-Vee among others. The toys are then given to the Salvation Army who disburses them to needy families
The program’s track record nationally in recent years is impressive. “Over the past 10 years, Marines have distributed an average of over 15,000,000 toys annually and brought the joy of Christmas to many a child,” according to program material.
And the program’s history is equally impressive. For nearly 65 years, Toys for Tots has been collecting toys donated by caring Americans. The program started in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks — with the support of members of the Los Angeles Marine Corps unit — collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children in the Los Angeles area. The program was a huge success — so it was expanded nationally. Since then, the Marines have collected and distributed more than 418,000,000 toys. Campaigns begin in October and last until Dec. 22. Today, Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) tax exempt, not-for-profit charity, is the authorized fundraising and support organization. If one doesn’t have time to buy a toy consider making a tax deductible donation to: Marine Toys for Tots Foundation 18251 Quantize Gateway Drive Triangle, Va. 22172 Contact toysfortots.org
