MHS jumps in then jumps out of last-chance meet
April 18, 2013 - Andy Heintz
With such poor weather this spring, high school track and field athletes had to especially good in the early stages of the season to qualify for the Drake Relays. There were so few chances to qualify and show your worth that it wasn't too hard to keep track of how our area athletes were doing.
The deadline to qualify for the relays was tonight, officially 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for results to be entered and posted.
Marshalltown decided to get into the Newton co-ed invitational tonight but then backed out this afternoon after hearing that temperatures would likely reach around 40 degrees and the rain likely wouldn't stop.
It was a bold move because of the situation of being the final chance to qualify for the Drake Relays, but I understand it. The Relays are great but the most important meet of the season is the State Meet in May. And such poor weather tonight could have led to injuries. It just wasn't worth it.
Athletes definitely had to earn their spot this year. There was no wiggle room.
We'll have the area qualifiers in the Drake Relays in the next few days. Check back for those.
