Beyond the obvious: what I cannot live without
October 17, 2013 - Stephanie Ivankovich
Someone asked me what is something I cannot live without. That’s obvious- water, shelter, family, freedom and God. But then I thought about it more, beyond the obvious, there are a few or in my case five, things I could not live without.
Item number one (these are in no particular order) is coffee. I am almost not functional in the mornings without it. I about had a heart attack when I moved here and did not see a Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts. I then realized a Starbucks was hiding inside Hy-Vee, that was a relief. Every morning I get the usual as Erin and the other wonderful ladies at Starbucks would say, the tall skinny iced mocha and I start my day.
Number two is social media. I know, I know, social media is a thing of the “new generation,” but I can’t imagine going back to a life without it. In addition to reading the newspaper every morning, I scroll down Twitter and Instagram to see what my friends, family, celebrities, favorite teams/athletes and just in general, what the world is up to. It’s also a great way to share with my friends what I am doing as well.
Number three would be my friends. I may not see them everyday but I know my friends are there for me and I couldn’t imagine who I would be today without them. Without having great friends it would be a lonely, sad life. Being lonely can drive someone mad, so this is essentially why I couldn’t live without friends. Here is a shout out to my best friends: Melissa, Joey, Nicole and Devlin.
Number four would be fitness. Fitness is something myself and everyone else needs to live long and stay healthy. From running a couple miles, to working out on a Bowflex to even jogging around the neighborhood, a good workout ends in the body feeling amazing. Without working out I would feel lazy, which is not a good feeling. Also, if I didn’t eat healthy and not work out my body would shut down and I would get different diseases. I couldn’t live as I am today without staying active.
The last but certainly not least is music. A life without a tune is dull. Imagine taking a road trip and hearing nothing but the car’s engine on a lonely road or going to store where all you hear is the beep of an item being scanned. Something I enjoy is plugging in my headphones and just listening to my favorite genres, house or hip-hop music. Music is a great therapy and the world would be less colorful without it.
There you have it. I could write about five more things I could not live without like fashion, sports, writing, animals and photography, but five is a solid number.
