Running into Johnny Orr in Conrad

December 31, 2013 - Bennet Goldstein

With the news of the passing of legendary Iowa State basketball coach Johnny Orr, it brought back a recent memory of him. Not being a native Iowan, I did not grow up with memories of the legend, so my encounter is relatively a newer one. While covering Conrad's Black Dirt Days parade in 2010, I was amazed to see Orr riding in a convertible. It was fun to see the eyes light up from all of the parade visitors that day when they realized Orr was in their small town celebrating Black Dirt Days. Sometimes in this job the monotony of covering parade after parade can get old. That day, it was definitely worth it to see Orr, who stayed after the parade and walked around the festival signing autographs and talking with people. He seemed to be in good spirits and genuinely enjoyed meeting people.
