My latest votes in the latest high school boys basketball poll

January 21, 2014 - Troy Hyde
It's still early in the process, and the rankings really have no effect to what will happen at Wells Fargo in March. but here is a run down of how I voted this week in the high school boys' basketball poll.

Class 4A is shaping up to be an interesting race. I had the chance to see Johnston in person the other night and that team is tall, long and really good with Jay Knuth back. I am glad to see them make the top 10 this week.

Iowa City West lost again. But don't count them out. The 4A pairings came out today and the Trojans should have an easy run to the state tournament and then it is anyone's game.

Ankeny Centennial hosts No. 7 Des Moines North ton Tuesday and then travels to No. 6 Southeast Polk on Friday, so we will see if the Jaguars can stay unbeaten. Another big CIML game pits newly ranked Johnston against previously ranked West Des Moines Valley on Friday.

No. 2 Bettendorf will face No. 3 North Scott on Friday in a battle of unbeaten teams. That should help clear up more of the elite teams out east. No. 1 Dubuque Senior also hosts Class 3A No. 1 Dubuque Wahlert on Friday.

Three different teams in 3A got first-place votes this week after Harlan dropped its first game of the year. There also were 18 schools who got at least one vote, which tells me that 3A could be wide open. Waverly-Shell Rock and Pella both jumped into the poll this week at 7 and 10, respectively.

There are two new teams in the 2A poll this week. Western Christian got all 15 first-place votes, while Carroll Kuemper and Dike-New Hartford are both new to this week's poll. Four undefeated teams are ranked, including the top three teams. New Hampton's win over Clear Lake flip-flopped those two schools at 3 and 4.

I voted to put Meskwaki Settlement School into the poll this week at Class 1A after its win over previously unbeaten Dunkerton. Instead, Dunkerton remains at No. 8. Ar-We-Va's unbeaten record got some attention this week, putting it into the top 10 for the first time this year. Nodaway Valley's first loss of the season dropped the Wolverines to fifth and 1-2-3 stayed the same with LeMars Gehlen, Newell-Fonda and West Lyon. Unbeaten Lamoni moved up from 6 to 4 this week, as well.

Eighteen different schools got votes in 2A and 19 were picked in 1A. The fields appear to be wide open as we turn up court toward the home stretch of the season.

The rest of the season should be a dandy.
