Multiple losses force movement in weekly boy's hoops poll

January 27, 2014 - Troy Hyde
Class 4A

1. Bettendorf

2. Dubuque Senior

3. Iowa City West

4. Southeast Polk

5. North Scott

6. Waukee

7. Des Moines North

8. Johnston

9. Ankeny Centennial

10. Cedar Rapids Kennedy

My Notes: Centennial had a tough week with two close losses on the road to Southeast Polk and Des Moines North. I jumped Bettendorf over Dubuque Senior because the Bulldogs' blowout win at North Scott was impressive. Both Bettendorf and Senior are unbeaten, and I wouldn't argue with either one being No. 1. Johnston continues to climb in my poll -- and in the AP poll -- as the Dragons still haven't lost with Jay Knuth in the lineup. This will be a fun race to watch as the postseason nears.

Class 3A

1. Clear Lake

2. Dubuque Wahlert

3. Harlan

4. Central Clinton

5. Dallas Center-Grimes

6. Sioux City Bishop Heelan

7. Waverly-Shell Rock

8. Western Dubuque

9. Pella

10. Fort Madison

My Notes: Lots of teams lost in the 3A last week, which makes it interesting for the rankings. Dubuque Wahlert nearly beat Senior, but I had Clear Lake as my No. 1 before the week and going undefeated kept it there this week. That is another one where 1-2 are pretty close. Carroll lost a couple times to drop out of my poll. It looks like I had Bishop Heelan and Dallas Center-Grimes higher than most of the other voters. We'll see how that plays out. Fort Madison gets into my poll this week.

Class 2A

1. Western Christian

2. New Hampton

3. West Fork

4. Iowa City Regina

5. Sioux Center

6. Fort Dodge St. Edmond

7. Carroll Kuemper Catholic

8. West Marshall

9. IKM-Manning

10. Cascade

My Notes: Cascade's two losses pushes them all the way from 2 to 10 in poll this week. Iowa City Regina stayed unbeaten and continues to impress me. That's why I pushed the Regals all the way up to 4. This was another week where a lot of the top teams suffered losses so it's created some differences from voters around the state. I still have Carroll Kuemper and Fort Dodge St. Edmond in my rankings, and I dropped out East Sac County after multiple losses. Treynor and Des Moines Christian just missed the cut for me this week. I put West Marshall in my poll this week. The Trojans' 11-game win streak has my attention. And the two road losses were by a combined four points.

Class 1A

1. LeMars Gehlen Catholic

2. Newell-Fonda

3. Lamoni

4. Keota

5. Nodaway Valley

6. West Lyon

7. Meskwaki Settlement School

8. Dunkerton

9. Van Buren

10. Ar-We-Va

My Notes: I moved up Lamoni and Keota after losses by West Lyon. Newell-Fonda and LeMars Gehlen could flip flop at 1-2 and you would get no argument from me. I love watching Meskwaki Settlement play. The Warriors play tough, aggressive, in your shorts defense and that leads to run-and-gun on offense. They deserve to be ranked especially since almost every voter still has Dunkerton ranked. Meskwaki beat Dunkerton by 12 earlier this year. I finally have Ar-We-Va ranked but I do question that schedule. Jesup dropped out this week after another loss. Gladbrook-Reinbeck is still on my radar, but the first-half woes have to be a concern to Coach Scott Kiburis and the rest of the coaching staff.
