AGWSR turns to old face for new AD
June 2, 2014 - Andy Heintz
Jason Berkey announced during the final weeks of AGWSR's track and field season that he no longer would be the athletic director at the school after accepting the same position at Aplington-Parkersburg.
Berkey then let the surrounding media know who was taking over Monday, and that person is former AGWSR AD Brad Hames, who served eight years in the position before Berkey took over the past five seasons.
A lot of things factored into Hames getting back into the position. Ultimately it came down to his children getting older and the fact that he missed the relationships he had with some of the other athletic directors he dealt with on a daily basis.
"I enjoyed not being the AD the first couple of years because I was pretty burned out to be honest," said Hames. "But I am rejuvenated now. I am excited to work with some great student-athletes and some great coaches."
Hames has been an assistant boys basketball coach under Russ Banzhaf for the past 18 years and is finishing up his 16th season as the boy's golf coach. He will stay in those positions as he moves back into a leadership role as athletic director.
Hames said his first exited the athletic director position because his young children were playing in sports themselves and he wanted a chance to see them compete at the youth level. But now that they are approaching the high school level themselves, now was just as good a time as any to jump back into the position vacated by Berkey, who also will be an assistant boy's basketball coach at Aplington-Parkersburg under head coach Aaron Thomas. Thomas vacated his role as athletic director to be a principal at the school.
"I'll be at the events anyway," said Hames. "I enjoyed it before so I am looking forward to the opportunity again."
