Childhood coming back as an adult
August 6, 2014 - Pam Rodgers
I was a tomboy growing up. So instead of playing with Barbies and dolls, I was really into ninjas and army soldiers and things like that. I did like stuffed animals so I wasn’t a complete loss to my feminine side.
Anyway, the action packed toys translated into my television and movie habits as well. I really loved the Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This is a big step for me to admit that in such a public forum. It is something I tried to suppress in my teenage and college days. But alas I cannot change the past, so I may as well embrace it.
One of the main reasons it has been on my mind is the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that comes out this week. I’m not sure I can actually bring myself to watch it. Admittedly, the original film series was very cheesy/campy, but that appealed to me as a kid. I can roll my eyes at it now but never lose my affection for my half shelled friends.
From the articles I’ve seen, the filmmakers seem to have amped up the special effects to make the turtles more lifelike a la “Avatar.” The technological advances are great, I just don’t think I can get into a franchise that I already have fond memories of. Add in the fact that it has been more than 20 years since I saw the first film, perhaps my tastes have changed (Gosh, I hope so, yeesh!).
I guess it was only a matter of time before the movie "remakers" got their hooks into all the series from my youth. Earlier this year they announced a new Power Rangers movie was in the works. I guess it is true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Turtle Power! (Anybody else want pizza now?)
