Basking in the sunshine

March 4, 2010 - Pam Rodgers

I don’t want to jinx it, but I can hardly contain my joy at this past week's weather, which had the most amazing sunshine and above freezing temperatures ever. It actually makes spring seem like a secure possibility now. I was afraid we’d skip right to summer before we got rid of this snow.
But with melting comes danger. After the sun goes down, it turns some areas in to nighmarish places to walk. It doesn’t affect car travel much, but certain areas are very slippery for foot traffic. I myself have almost fallen attempting to get to my car in certain parking lots and my brother’s driveway. It faces north so ice still remained at the beginning of the week because of the absence of sunshine. That’s when I got fed up of almost slipping just trying to get into his house. I got out his ice scraper and took the ice off. Patches still remain but now I can walk with little fear of falling. I know that he would have done it but it was taking him a bit to get around to it.
Despite the ice after effects, I wouldn’t trade this weather for anything. It is exactly what we need, a slow melt. It feels awesome to step outside and not shiver immediately. I am tempted to break out a lighter coat, but I don’t want to take that chance. You never know what next week will bring. So let’s all cross our fingers, pray, hope, do a spirtual dance or whatever else you can think of to keep this warmer weather around.

P.S. I would also like to point out that if this was November, we would all be saying how cold it was outside. We would be bundled up to keep the cold out instead of contemplating getting a lighter jacket. It is crazy the differences the seasons and previous temperatures make.
