Cleaning grandma’s basement
September 5, 2010 - Pam Rodgers
Saturday, my mom, sister and I went to Montezuma to help clean her basement after getting water in her basement for the first time since she’s lived there. I was glad to help because I remember her basement being an indoor playground when?I was little and wanted to do what I can to keep it tidy.
A funny thing happened while we were cleaning. Grandma has a fire place and she stores the wood in the basement. Wood for last winter was still in the basment was still down there when water came so we needed to move the pile, salvage was could be burned and get rid of the rest. My sister was moving pieces of wood and boards in the pile when we hear her shriek and carefully run out for the small to the doorway.
"There's a snake or lizard or something under that board!" she said.
While I am not a fan of reptiles, I am not squimish enough that I won't kill one. my simple reply was, "Get a shovel."
Well the three of us (mom, Trish and I) readied ourselves to take care of the problem. Mom had a big scoop shovel to lift the board. I had a sharp shovel and Trish had a rake. Mom lifted the board with her shovel. Sure enough, there was a salamander under it. I was ready with my shovel and proceeded to stab it a couple of times with my shovel. Then Trish got the nearly dead crature on her shovel and took outside to give the cats. We ended the day sucessful salamander slayers.
