December 27, 2007
By TIMES-REPUBLICAN STAFF
IOWA CITY — Big Ten Conference women’s basketball play begins Friday as Iowa hosts Penn State.

Defense has been a strength for the host Hawkeyes (7-4) as Iowa leads the Big Ten in scoring defense at 54.2 points per game.

The Nittany Lions (9-3) are on the opposite end of the conference rankings in scoring defense as they are last at 68.8 ppg.

Both teams force their opponents to have little success from 3-point range. Penn State stands second in the Big Ten in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.280) and the Hawkeyes are right behind in third (.283).

Junior forward Wendy Ausdemore is Iowa’s leading scorer at 12.4 points per game. The Neola native leads the nation in 3-point shooting percentage for the third consecutive week as she is 30-of-51 — 58.8 percent.

Four players score from 12 to 15 points for the Nittany Lions led by sophomore guard Tyra Grant’s 15.4 ppg.

Iowa won the last meeting in the series 79-72 last February at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to end a six-game losing streak to Penn State.
