Fall points lead Rams past Bobcats

January 9, 2008
The Marshalltown wrestling team went toe-to-toe with seventh-ranked Southeast Polk on Tuesday night, winning just as many matches as the Rams in the cross-CIML dual at the Roundhouse.

But the Rams rang up seven pinfall victories in a 42-26 victory over the Bobcats.

All seven Southeast Polk wins came via pins, outscoring Marshalltown’s series of major and minor decisions. Eric Shomo scored the Bobcats’ lone win by fall, pinning Tyler German in 4 minutes, 52 seconds, in their 119-pound match.

Five of Southeast Polk’s six ranked wrestlers came out on top of their bouts, excluding ninth-ranked 171 pounder Brian Johnson. Marshalltown’s Theron Stewart, wrestling down from 189 for the first time this season, took a 7-5 lead into the third period and held on for the 8-7 decision.

Sam Jebsen moved his season record to 10-2 with a 9-0 major decision over Jason Ashby to start the meet at 160 pounds, and Stewart’s upset victory gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.

Southeast Polk quickly erased that with four straight pins — two by fifth-ranked wrestlers Ethan Bass (189) and Barrett Eller (215) — to get the Rams on top for good.

“Southeast Polk is in our district wrestling tournament and winning matches against them allows our kids to be seeded higher than them,” said MHS head coach Mike Husak. “I told the kids that they need to wrestle for themselves tonight as they prepare for a bid to go to the state tournament. Seven of them were able to come through.”

Luke Rebik scored a first-period takedown that meant the difference in his 2-0 decision at 112, and Shomo’s pin made it 24-16 in Southeast Polk’s favor.

Back-to-back pins by the Rams opened the lead back up to 36-16, but Marshalltown claimed three of the final four bouts. Gustavo Martinez (135) and Mike Schwebach (152) won by decision and Matt Keith (140) had a major decision to account for the Bobcats’ final points.

Martinez trailed 6-2 entering the third period against Zach Berglund but he scored two takedowns and a total of five near-fall points for the comeback win. Schwebach survived Cody Clark’s come-from-behind bid, holding on for a 7-6 decision after leading 5-1 heading into the third.

Tom Schaefer wrestled his first varsity match at 130 for the Bobcats, who go to Fort Dodge Thursday. On Saturday, MHS (7-11) competes in the Cedar Rapids Jefferson Individual Tournament.
