CRESTON — Freshman forward Diamond Little scored a game- and career-high 26 points in leading the Marshalltown Community College women’s basketball team to its fifth straight victory, an 84-72 win over host Southwestern here Wednesday night.

Little added “somewhere between 15 and 20 rebounds,” according to head coach Larry Roberts, who also welcomed starting point guard Catalina de la Quintana back to the lineup after she missed one game with a sprained ankle.

Little’s previous high game was 16 points, and this was just her fourth double-digit scoring performance this season.

“She was just phenominal tonight,” Roberts said.

Channing Merchant pitched in with 13 points and Megan Stanton added 12 as the Tigers (11-4, 3-2) carried a three-point lead through halftime and pulled away against Southwestern’s roster of only seven.

“We didn’t play with much enthusiasm or excitement, which is not good,” Roberts said. “Maybe we were a little overconfident after beating them by 20 the first time.”

Marshalltown’s season-high scoring output came in its first meeting with the Spartans in a 99-72 victory on Dec. 2. Little was one of six Tigers to score in double figures in their first go-round with Southwestern.

All five starters scored in double figures for Southwestern (4-9, 1-2), led by Kim Wolfer’s 19 points. Anna Waymaster added 16, Tiffany Troutwine netted 14 and Nicole Meyer 11 in the Spartans’ second straight loss.

The MCC women return home to take on 12th-ranked DMACC at 1 p.m. Saturday at Babe Harder Gym.
